Dalai Lama, title given by the Tibetan people to their spiritual leader of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. They are a reincarnate and fallow custodian of a specific lineage of teachings and trained from a young age by students to be incarnations.
Since the time of the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century, has represented Buddhist values and traditions. Their religious authority went beyond sectarian, they are a unifying symbol of the Tibetan state by holding together disparate religious and regional groups to overcome sectarian and other divisions.
Tibet was rejected by both the Republic of China and the current People’s Republic of China. The Dalai Lamas headed the Tibetan government lives in exiled sinces1951.
