Leslie Van Houten
She was charged with the 1969 murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, and she was sentenced to death and retrial in 1976. She received a new sentence in 1978, 70 years to life in prison.
Born in 1949 in the Los Angeles suburb, she grew up in a middle-class, churchgoing family. Her mother and father divorced when she was 14. She started smoking marijuana at 15 and taking LSD and ran away with her boyfriend, but she eventually finished high school and graduated. She became pregnant; her mother performed an abortion and buried the fetus in their backyard.
