A career criminal spent half of his life in correctional institutions, an unsuccessful songwriter. Who then led a cult, based in California, in the late 1960s? The members committed nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969. We were fixated on the image of an impending apocalyptic race war between blacks and whites.

Charles Miles Maddox, born in 1934, never met his father; his stepfather worked intermittently in local mills, had a local reputation as a con artist, and claimed to be an army colonel.
