Tom Thomson, Jack Pine Against The Elements

Reinterpretation of The Jack Pine by Tom Thomson.
Painting A Forgery Of Tom Thomson Jack Pine By Chris Dale

Tom Thomson

I derived inspiration for this artwork from a Tom Thomson painting with the identical title, where the sky’s reflection in the water remained consistent.

I did a series of paintings I called forgeries. As I thought, it would be fun to try my hand at this long-standing tradition of copying so closely that no one could tell the difference. I am curious if it is possible to copy another painting so well that you can not tell the difference—are they good paintings, or are they just parts of the same old painting if they are so simple to copy?

My skill as a copying painter has not developed. I never had traditional training in art and spent years studying these particular artist techniques. It was never my intention to paint like anyone else. However, copying a painter’s work is a better way to learn about them than looking at it, so the procedure was well worth the effort.
