Born 1927 – 2023 in Harlem, New York, the son of Jamaican parents, father chef, mother housekeeper. American singer, actor, and civil rights activist. Popularized calypso music to international audiences, 1950s and 1960s. His single artist album Calypso (1956) was the first million-selling LP.
