
Frida Kahlo
1907 – 1954 a Mexican painter known for her surrealist or magical self-portraits and artifacts of popular culture, she employed folk style. Part of Mexicayotl movement defining a Mexican identity.
German father mestizo mother lived in her family home in Coyoacán she was disabled by polio as a child, injured in a bus accident at 18 caused her lifelong pain. She returned to her childhood interest in art with the idea of becoming an artist.
Joined the Mexican Communist Party in 1927 and met artist Diego Rivera. The couple married in 1929
Diego Rivera
1886 – 1957 a Mexican painter known for large frescoes to establish the mural movement in Mexican and international. 1922 painted murals in Mexico City, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City. In 1931 a retrospective, Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The third of four wives was Frida Kahlo, a volatile relationship until her death. His final marriage was to his agent.
