1894 – 1991 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, father was known as an “alienist”, strict Presbyterians. Third-generation American of Irish descent. Graham’s mother, from a comfortable life, was not one that encouraged dancing.
An American modern dancer and choreographer, whose style, the Graham technique, reshaped American dance. First dancer to perform at the White House. Has a cultural ambassador receiving award of the US and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Founded School in her name in 1926 is the oldest school of dance in the United States.
