A new media way of expressing one’s artistic endeavours through motion captured on cellulose.  Like all new media, people try to control the meaning that comes out of it.  As they often contradict the prevailing opinions of the surrounding culture.  When most come out first, they push against the prevailing ideas.  But in Germany where he was a star they learned to use it for propaganda

At 20 ended law studies and concentrated on acting, joining Max Reinhardt’s acting troupe in 1906. In 1912, turned to a new medium of motion pictures and appeared in the 1913 The Student of Prague. Started working on Jewish legend of the Golem adapting to film. The Golem was a successful film that established him. 

In 1933 the Nazis came to power, Paul Wegener stayed an actor and appeared in propaganda films. At the end, the war was one of the first to rebuild cultural life in Berlin.
